Use a wide-cleave core with passive coverage and a safe ranged chainer.
Broad cleaving arcs that reliably hit multiple targets. Scales excellently with Damage, Quantity, and Size. Not the single highest base damage in the game, but its coverage + scaling makes it a premier Ogre core.
Passive close-range AoE that constantly chips enemies who enter melee. Pairs perfectly with Axe to clean up small foes and protect your space. Scales with Size and Cooldown.
Safe, bouncing chains that thin out packs and pick off ranged threats. For reliable stuns, add the Lightning Orb item—Lightning Staff itself focuses on chaining.
Consistent close-range slashes. Use if you prefer active swings over passive coverage; still scales on Damage, Cooldown, and Quantity.

XP / Luck / Curse are common early picks when offered; they are helpful but not mandatory “must-takes”. Take them if they appear early without skipping key combat tomes.
Global damage scaling for all weapons. Extremely efficient for Axe cleaves.
More projectiles or swings → faster clears and better coverage.
Higher attack frequency for all weapons; noticeably improves feel and DPS.
Bigger Axe arcs & Aura radius → more enemies hit per swing.
Extra barrier that soaks hits before HP—take if you need survivability for melee positioning.

Flat +damage increase that multiplies well with cleave scaling. Simple and strong.
Gains damage from kills up to a high cap. Excellent snowball tool if you’re already clearing waves fast.
On-hit explosions/impacts for extra wave clear. (Not an attack-speed item—pair with Cooldown Tome or Battery for speed.)
Builds a strong damage bonus while standing still—great when your coverage keeps enemies at bay.
Reflects projectiles and provides brief i-frames. Superb versus ranged pressure.
Overheal/ sustain-focused item that pairs with defensive routes. Use if you need more staying power.
Adds reliable stuns to your hits—great synergy with Lightning Staff chains.
Prioritize upgrades based on what the shop offers; don’t force a fixed script.
Look for Axe and a coverage tool (preferably Aura). Pick early economy tomes if they show without skipping strong combat tomes.
Start stacking Damage, Quantity, and Cooldown. Add Lightning Staff as ranged chainer.
Grow Size for much larger Axe arcs & Aura radius. Slot in items like Gym Sauce / Demonic Soul and Mirror or Chonkplate for comfort.
Continue stacking your best tomes and fill remaining slots. If you unlocked more weapon slots, consider a fourth slot only when it truly complements your scaling.

They create on-hit explosions. For faster swings, use Cooldown Tome (and items like Battery if available).
Aim for a focused set of 3–4 depending on your unlocks. A tight kit often outperforms unfocused 4-slot setups.
Lightning Staff chains; stuns come from Lightning Orb. Combine them for control.
Size is great, but Quantity and Cooldown often increase real DPS earlier.
It’s a reliable flat damage boost—still excellent, just not a ramping effect on its own.
Axe + Aura + Lightning Staff covers melee cleave, passive protection, and safe ranged chaining. If you unlock a 4th slot, add a comfort pick like Sword or a utility weapon.
They are excellent early options when offered, but not mandatory. If strong combat tomes appear early, it’s fine to take those first.
Mirror for projectile matchups; Shield Tome when learning melee spacing; Aegis (weapon) if you prefer active blocks and shockwaves; Chonkplate if you lean into sustain.
