📋 Overview
Version 1.0.12 represents a major stability and balance update for Megabonk, addressing critical issues that emerged during the game's explosive first month. Following leaderboard exploits that disrupted the competitive community and meta strategies that resulted in multi-hour endgame sessions, developer vedinad implemented comprehensive fixes alongside targeted weapon adjustments.
This patch focuses on three core areas: securing leaderboard integrity through anti-cheat measures and permanent ban systems, redesigning the Final Swarm phase to create faster and more challenging endgame experiences, and rebalancing progression systems to encourage build diversity rather than single-strategy dominance.
⚖️ Balance Changes at a Glance
🔼 Buffed
Chaos Tome – Reward bonus increased by 50%, making the high-risk gamble more worthwhile for experimental builds.
Black Hole – Default projectile size increased by 20%, improving base crowd control without item investment.
Bush (Marksman Passive) – Cooldown now scales faster (-0.4s every 10 levels), reaching maximum efficiency (1s cooldown) at level 100.
Duration-Based Weapons –
Dexecutioner,
Axe, and
Sword now function properly at high duration values thanks to projectile cap fixes.
🔽 Nerfed
XP Tome – Experience gain reduced from 9% per level to 7%, slowing overall progression speed.
(Developer indicated willingness to revert based on community feedback)
Black Hole – Proc coefficient reduced from 0.9 to 0.7, bringing it in line with similar weapons (
Sword,
Axe,
Aura) and reducing synergy with on-hit effects like
Moldy Cheese.
Joe's Dagger – Damage scaling capped at 200% per minute per dagger. With 10 daggers, maximum scaling is 2000% per minute, preventing extreme late-game dominance while preserving early/mid-game strength.
Rolly Bones Enemies – Movement speed reduced in Desert biome to decrease late-game farming efficiency.
👻 Final Swarm Rework
The endgame phase received a complete overhaul to address the problematic meta that encouraged players to endure hours-long sessions at sub-2 FPS framerates. The previous Final Swarm could be indefinitely sustained through execution chains and Black Hole stalling, creating an unhealthy competitive environment where leaderboard positions were determined by endurance rather than skill.
Developer Commentary: "The current meta required you to wear sunglasses and watch a slideshow at 1.5fps for 5 hours to get a WR. This was never intended, and I don't think anyone actually enjoyed that."
Key Changes
- New Ghost-Type Enemies – Special enemy variants spawn during Final Swarm that are significantly harder to control
- Reduced Control Effectiveness – Execution mechanics and Black Hole crowd control are substantially less effective, forcing active movement and adaptation
- Faster Escalation – The swarm now reaches lethal density more quickly, creating natural run endings between 20-45 minutes instead of 3-5 hours
- Skill-Based Survival – Success now depends on positioning, resource management, and build optimization rather than patience
Meta Impact: The update shifts competitive strategy from "infinite sustain + stall" to "burst damage + efficient routing." Builds focused on raw DPS and mobility are now favored over pure survivability compositions. Check out our updated build guides for post-patch strategies.
🎭 Characters Affected by This Patch
Bush received significant buffs to his Marksman passive, Spaceman got bug fixes for his XP passive, and Megachad's Theme was reportedly added to the game soundtrack. View the full character roster and their updated best builds.
🏆 Leaderboard Improvements & Anti-Cheat
Following several days of leaderboard instability caused by exploits, comprehensive security measures have been implemented to protect competitive integrity.
Security Enhancements
Backend Secured – Multiple exploits that allowed leaderboard manipulation have been patched
Permanent Ban System – Confirmed cheaters are added to a global ban list and permanently removed from all
leaderboard displays
"All Leaderboards" Temporarily Removed – The combined leaderboard view has been disabled pending implementation of character-specific filtering and additional anti-cheat measures
⚠️ Warning to Cheaters: According to the developer: "Cheaters you better watch your ass or im clapping your cheeks back to the shadow realm where you belong."

🔧 Stability & Critical Bug Fixes
Major Fixes
Save File Corruption Fixed – Resolved the critical issue where crashes or forced exits (Alt+F4) could corrupt save data, preventing progress loss
Black Hole Hitbox Corrected – Fixed bug where Black Hole hitboxes were approximately 10x larger than the visual projectile, essentially covering entire maps
Spaceman Passive Restored – Spaceman's passive ability now correctly grants XP bonus per level as intended
Spiky Shield Stacking – Corrected stacking behavior for Spiky Shield item
Weapon Duration Logic Improved – Fixed projectile cap system preventing weapons like
Dexecutioner,
Axe, and
Sword from firing at high duration values. Previously, duration would keep projectiles "active" longer than intended, filling the cap with invisible/inactive projectiles
Performance Optimizations
- Major FPS improvements when using Dexecutioner at high projectile counts
- Significant performance boost for Black Hole builds with multiple simultaneous projectiles
- General stability improvements across all game systems
⚔️ Detailed Weapon Analysis
Role Change: Crowd Control → Crowd Control (Reduced Synergy)
- Size Buff: 20% larger base projectile improves baseline effectiveness without item investment
- Proc Nerf: Coefficient reduced from 0.9 to 0.7, matching other AoE weapons
- Impact: Still excellent for pure crowd control, but less explosive when combined with on-hit items like Moldy Cheese. Remains viable but no longer dominates late-game compositions. See optimal builds in our Black Hole Build Guide.
Scaling Cap Introduced: 200% damage increase per minute per dagger
- Example: With 10 daggers equipped, maximum scaling is 2000% damage per minute (previously unlimited)
- Timeline: At 10 daggers, reaching damage cap takes 10 minutes instead of scaling infinitely
- Developer Note: "Before this change, you could get 20,000% damage in 10 seconds, which nothing else in the game could contest lol"
- Impact: Remains a strong carry weapon through early and mid-game. No longer the sole viable option for record-breaking marathon runs. Encourages weapon diversity at high levels
Risk/Reward Rebalanced: 50% increase to all stat bonuses
- Previous State: High-risk gamble with underwhelming random stat gains
- New State: All random stat bonuses are 50% higher, making favorable RNG significantly more impactful
- Best Use: Experimental builds with high XP gain for frequent rerolls; avoid on highest difficulties where consistency is critical
- Community Reception: Now considered a viable alternative to meta Tome selections. Check our Tome Tier List for updated rankings.
Progression Speed Reduced: 9% → 7% XP gain per level
- Justification: The majority of competitive players requested this nerf to reduce early-game power spike disparity
- Effect: Slower leveling means delayed power spikes and more deliberate early-game planning
- Developer Stance: "At least give it a try, and If everyone ends up hating it, I can just revert it back to 9% next week. please go easy on me"
- Current Status: Change is provisional pending community feedback
Bush (Marksman Passive)
Scaling Improved: Cooldown reduction now provides clear milestones
- Starting Cooldown: 5 seconds
- Scaling Rate: -0.4 seconds every 10 levels
- Level 100 Cooldown: 1 second (cap)
- Breakpoints: Level 10 (4.6s), Level 50 (3s), Level 75 (2s), Level 100 (1s)
- Impact: More predictable power scaling makes Bush a stronger pick for execution-focused builds. See our Bush Best Build guide for optimal strategies.
💡 Strategic Implications
Build Diversity Opens Up
With Joe's Dagger capped and Final Swarm reworked, the competitive meta now rewards flexibility over single-strategy optimization. Previously dominant "stall until infinite scaling" approaches are no longer viable.
New Competitive Meta
Quality of Life Wins
- Save file integrity means you can safely close the game without fear of corruption
- FPS improvements allow late-game builds to remain playable instead of becoming slideshows
- Fixed weapon behaviors (Dexecutioner, Axe, Sword) open new build possibilities
