How to Restore Your Lost Megabonk Progress

New in v1.0.64: Steam achievement-based save recovery feature

🆕 Added January 25, 2026

📖 About Save Recovery

Lost your save file? Don't worry! As of v1.0.64 "H A T S", Megabonk includes a built-in save recovery feature that uses your Steam achievements to restore your progress.

This feature was added after community feedback about players losing their save data due to various issues including Steam Cloud conflicts, corrupted files, or system reinstalls.

💡 How It Works

The recovery system scans your Steam achievements and restores any unlocks, characters, weapons, and progress that are tied to achievements you've earned. Since achievements are stored on Steam's servers, they survive even if your local save file is lost.

🔧 How to Recover Your Save

Follow these simple steps to use the save recovery feature:

1

Launch Megabonk

Open Megabonk through Steam. Make sure you're logged into the same Steam account where you earned your achievements.

2

Open Settings

From the main menu, click on Settings (the gear icon).

3

Go to "Other" Tab

In the settings menu, navigate to the "Other" tab. This is where miscellaneous options are located.

4

Click "Recover Save"

Look for the "Recover Save" button and click it. The game will scan your Steam achievements and restore your progress.

5

Restart the Game

For best results, restart Megabonk after the recovery process completes.

✅ Recovery Complete!

After recovery, you should see your characters, weapons, and progress restored based on your Steam achievements. Check your unlocks to verify everything is back.

📋 What Gets Recovered (And What Doesn't)

✅ Things That ARE Recovered

⚠️ Things That May NOT Be Recovered

⚠️ Important Note

The recovery is not 100% complete. Any progress that isn't directly tied to a Steam achievement cannot be recovered through this system. Think of it as a "best effort" recovery that restores the most important unlocks.

🛡️ Preventing Future Save Loss

Manual Backup

To protect your progress, consider making manual backups of your save files:

Save File Locations:

C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\LocalLow\Ved\Megabonk\Saves

or

Documents\Megabonk\SaveData

💡 Tip: Access AppData

The AppData folder is hidden by default. To access it:

  1. Press Win + R
  2. Type %appdata% and press Enter
  3. Navigate up one folder, then into LocalLow

Steam Cloud

Megabonk supports Steam Cloud for automatic save backups. However, Steam Cloud can sometimes cause conflicts. Here's how to manage it:

To Enable/Disable Steam Cloud:

  1. Right-click Megabonk in your Steam library
  2. Select Properties
  3. Go to the General tab
  4. Check or uncheck "Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for Megabonk"

🚨 Before Manual Recovery

If you're manually restoring save files, disable Steam Cloud first to prevent Steam from overwriting your restored files with old data.

❓ Troubleshooting

Recovery Button Not Working?

Missing Unlocks After Recovery?

Corrupted Save File?

If your save file is corrupted and the game won't load:

  1. Navigate to your save folder (see locations above)
  2. Delete or rename the corrupted save files
  3. Launch the game (it will create a fresh save)
  4. Use the Recover Save feature to restore progress

Verifying Game Files

If you're having persistent issues, try verifying your game files:

  1. Right-click Megabonk in Steam
  2. Select Properties → Local Files
  3. Click "Verify Integrity of Game Files"

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this restore my silver currency?

Unfortunately, no. Silver is not tied to Steam achievements, so it cannot be recovered through this system.

Q: Can I use this to transfer saves between computers?

Partially. If you have Steam Cloud enabled, your saves should sync automatically. The recovery feature is meant for lost data, not transferring saves.

Q: Is there any risk to using the recovery feature?

The recovery feature is safe to use and won't delete or overwrite existing progress. It only adds unlocks based on your achievements.

Q: I never lost my save. Should I use this feature?

There's no harm in using it, but if your save is intact, you probably don't need to. It won't give you anything you don't already have.
