Overview
This guide focuses on the Forest and Desert progression route and its 3 difficulty tiers. Unlike traditional roguelikes with dozens of standalone stages, this route uses a tier system where the number of stages increases with difficulty. Tier 1 has 1 stage, Tier 2 has 2 stages, and Tier 3 features all 3 stages culminating in a final boss encounter.
Each map offers distinct terrain, enemy types, and environmental mechanics that dramatically affect your build strategy. Forest provides natural cover and verticality, while Desert challenges you with open terrain and visibility-reducing sandstorms. Understanding these differences is crucial for optimizing your character builds and reaching the leaderboards.
Megabonk Maps List
Forest
Beginner-FriendlyForest is the default starting map, featuring dense foliage and varied elevation. Trees and rocks provide natural barriers against enemies, while the vertical terrain allows skilled players to use jump mechanics for tactical advantages. Enemy visibility can be challenging as creatures blend into the environment.
Desert
Advanced ChallengeDesert presents a dramatically more difficult challenge with flat, exposed terrain offering little cover. Sandstorms periodically reduce visibility to near-zero, and tornadoes scatter across the landscape providing vertical lift. Skeleton Balls can spawn early and block shrine access, requiring strong mobility builds.
Understanding Tiers & Stages
Megabonk's progression system uses Tiers and Stages. Each tier determines the number of stages you'll play through in a single run:
| Tier | Stages | Maps Played | Difficulty | Unlock Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 1 Stage | Forest only | โ โโ | Available from start |
| Tier 2 | 2 Stages | Forest โ Desert (via portal) | โ โ โ | Beat Tier 1 boss |
| Tier 3 | 3 Stages | Forest โ Desert โ Final Boss | โ โ โ | Beat Tier 2 final boss |
How Stage Progression Works
After defeating a stage boss, a portal appears that transports you to the next stage. However, there are important restrictions:
- Tier 1: No portal appears after the boss. Run ends after defeating the boss and surviving the final swarm.
- Tier 2: Portal opens after Stage 1 boss, leading to Stage 2. Run ends after Stage 2 boss.
- Tier 3: Portals open after both Stage 1 and Stage 2 bosses, leading to the ultimate final boss encounter.
How to Unlock Desert Map
Desert is locked by default and requires specific steps to unlock. You must reach Stage 2 of Forest Tier 2 while playing as CL4NK.
Step-by-Step Unlock Guide:
-
Unlock CL4NK Character
Kill 7,500 total enemies across all runs to unlock the Revolver weapon, then purchase CL4NK from the shop using silver coins. -
Complete Forest Tier 1
Play any character through Forest Tier 1, defeat the boss (Lil Bark), and survive the final swarm to unlock Tier 2. -
Start Forest Tier 2 as CL4NK
Select Forest Tier 2 from the map screen and choose CL4NK as your character. -
Defeat Stage 1 Boss
Build your character through Stage 1, defeat Chadbark, and enter the portal that appears. -
Enter Stage 2 Portal
As soon as you step through the portal into Stage 2, Desert map unlocks. You don't need to complete Stage 2 โ just reaching it is enough.
Map Bosses & Encounters
Each stage ends with a boss fight. Bosses become progressively more difficult across tiers and feature unique mechanics that require specific strategies.
Forest Bosses
| Boss | Tier | Key Mechanics | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lil Bark | Tier 1 | Stationary attacks | Kite in circles, maintain distance |
| Chadbark | Tier 2 | Enhanced attacks, faster swarms | High DPS focus, manage final swarm |
| Bark Vader | Tier 3 | Removes all weapons except starter, healing pylons | Focus starter weapon upgrades, destroy pylons immediately |
Desert Bosses
| Boss | Tier | Key Mechanics | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lil Anubis | Tier 1 | Laser barrages from distance | High mobility, use tornadoes for evasion |
| Anubruh | Tier 2 | Rotating blue laser attacks | Stay close to feet, dodge rotations |
| Juge Anubis | Tier 3 | Removes secondary weapons, ice projectiles + lasers, shield pylons | Destroy pylons carefully, dodge ice freezes, hide behind obstacles |
Hidden Bosses
Both maps contain optional hidden boss encounters that unlock new characters:
- Bush (Forest) - Interact with Suspicious Bush statue to trigger. Defeating unlocks Bush character. Requires Sniper Rifle unlocked.
- Bandit (Desert) - Interact with Bandit statue. Defeat while carrying Dexecutioner weapon to unlock Bandit character.
Map-Specific Strategies
Forest Tactics
Forest's terrain heavily favors defensive and positioning-based strategies:
- Use vertical terrain: Jump mechanics shine here. Extra jump height and jump count provide enormous tactical advantages for dodging and exploring.
- Hide behind obstacles: Trees and rocks break line of sight with ranged enemies. Use them to recover HP and reposition.
- Corner enemies: Natural valleys and hills allow you to funnel enemy groups into chokepoints for AoE weapons.
- Scout carefully: Shrines can hide behind trees. Explore systematically to avoid missing charge shrines.
Desert Survival Guide
Desert demands aggressive builds with high burst damage and mobility:
- Prioritize movement speed: Open terrain means enemies can swarm from all directions. Speed is survival.
- Manage Skeleton Balls: These rolling enemies spawn early and can block shrine access. Invest in damage or evasion to handle them.
- Use tornadoes strategically: Desert tornadoes provide massive vertical lift. Use them to escape ground swarms and survey the map.
- Sandstorm awareness: When sandstorms hit, avoid exploring new areas. Stay in cleared zones until visibility returns.
- Avoid Bandit statue: Unless specifically attempting the unlock, skip the Bandit fight. It's extremely difficult and adds unnecessary risk.
Weapons for Each Map
Universal Recommendations: Dexecutioner, Katana, and Aegis work exceptionally well on both maps. Dexecutioner's execute mechanic and Aegis's defensive shield are near-mandatory for Tier 3 boss fights.
Shrine Distribution by Map
This page covers where Shrine decisions fit into each map route. For Charge, Greed, Boss Curse, rewards and unlock rules, use the dedicated Megabonk Shrines Guide.
| Map or stage | Distribution and route impact | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Forest | Shrines are part of the random stage layout rather than fixed-coordinate landmarks. | Scout in wide loops and mark risky Greed or Boss Curse interactions for a later return. |
| Desert | Random placement combines with Sandstorm visibility and the Tornado unlock condition. | Keep an unused Charge Shrine available when targeting the Sandstorm requirement, then charge it during the weather window. |
| Graveyard / Crypt route | Shrines remain run interactables, while Crypt Keys, Big Bob and the secret room belong to the map-specific route. | Use the Graveyard Guide for Crypt objectives and the Shrines Guide for Shrine choices. |
| Future stages after Beacon | Beacon adds two extra Charge Shrines to future stages per copy. | Plan additional scouting time only after taking Beacon; do not rely on one universal Shrine count or route. |

Beating Tier 3: Expert Tips
Tier 3 represents Megabonk's ultimate challenge. Success requires build optimization, shrine mastery, and perfect execution across all 3 stages.
Essential Tier 3 Strategy
Build Preparation Checklist
- โ Unlock all weapon/tome slots (4 weapons, 4 tomes minimum)
- โ Unlock Banish ability (complete 40 quests) - removes bad items from pool
- โ Unlock Toggler (purchase 40 unlocks, then buy it for 4 Silver) - disables eligible unwanted content
- โ Disable bad items: Borgar, Speed Boi, and situational items that don't fit your build
- โ Raise Difficulty to ~40% before leaving Stage 1 for increased XP gain
Stage-by-Stage Focus
Stage 1 (Forest): Farm XP aggressively. Get XP Tome, Luck Tome, and one damage-scaling weapon. Reach level 40-50 before taking boss portal. Don't rush - the stronger you leave Stage 1, the easier Stage 2 and 3 become.
Stage 2 (Desert): Complete your weapon loadout. Add Aegis for survivability and Dexecutioner for execute damage. Scale your best weapon heavily with Quantity/Projectile tomes. Target level 70-80 before final boss.
Stage 3 (Final Boss): Focus survives over DPS. HP Regen becomes critical since Lifesteal won't work during boss shield phases. Keep moving, destroy pylons immediately, and play defensively until you get weapons back.

Forest and Desert share the tier route explained on this page. For Crypt keys, Big Bob and the secret room, use the dedicated Graveyard Guide instead of applying the Forest and Desert route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which maps does this guide cover?
This page covers the Forest and Desert tier progression route. For Crypt keys, Big Bob and the secret room, open the separate Graveyard Guide.
How do I unlock the Desert map?
To unlock Desert, you must: 1) Unlock CL4NK by killing 7,500 total enemies and obtaining the Revolver, 2) Play Forest Tier 2 as CL4NK, 3) Defeat the first boss and enter the Stage 2 portal. Desert unlocks automatically when you reach Stage 2.
What is the difference between Tiers and Stages?
Tiers determine difficulty level and how many stages you'll play. Tier 1 has 1 stage, Tier 2 has 2 stages, and Tier 3 has 3 stages. Each stage ends with a boss fight.
Which map is harder, Forest or Desert?
Desert is significantly more difficult than Forest. It features more aggressive enemies, open terrain with less cover, sandstorm effects that reduce visibility, and tougher boss mechanics. Most players recommend mastering Forest Tier 3 before attempting Desert Tier 2.
Can I skip directly to Tier 3?
No. You must complete Tier 1 to unlock Tier 2, and complete Tier 2 to unlock Tier 3. Each tier must be selected manually from the map screen before starting a new run.
Do higher tiers unlock new maps?
No. Higher tiers don't introduce new maps but instead increase the number of stages you progress through using the existing Forest and Desert maps. Tier 3 takes you through Forest, then Desert, then a final boss arena.
What happens after I defeat a stage boss?
In Tier 2 and 3, a portal appears after defeating a stage boss. Enter the portal to advance to the next stage. In Tier 1, no portal appears and the run ends after the boss and final swarm.
Are Shrine locations and counts fixed on every map?
Do not rely on fixed coordinates or one universal count for route planning. Explore the current stage layout, and remember that Beacon adds two extra Charge Shrines to future stages per copy. See the Shrines Guide for reward and unlock rules.
