Graveyard Crypt
Steve can appear in either timed Crypt. The second Crypt is the practical target because the outdoor section gives you time to finish the build.
Trigger him in the right Crypt, build around percentage-based boss damage, keep him controlled, and finish the fight without letting one close-range hit end the run.
Reviewed July 24, 2026Do not fight Spooky Steve in the starting Crypt. Escape, collect four Crypt Keys, power up around the Graveyard, then enter the second Crypt. Let its timer expire, use the short grace window to position, and kill him with repeated Dexecutioner execute procs while long-duration crowd control keeps him away. Athena with Aegis is the safest setup; defeating Steve unlocks Roberto.
Steve can appear in either timed Crypt. The second Crypt is the practical target because the outdoor section gives you time to finish the build.
When the displayed Crypt timer reaches zero, a short grace window remains before Steve appears. Zero is your warning to take position.
Find the four marked coffins outside, defeat their guardians, pick up every Crypt Key, and use the complete set at the Crypt Door.
Defeating Spooky Steve completes Roberto's boss requirement and makes the character available for purchase.
The first Crypt is a trap for this objective: Steve can spawn there, but your weapons and tomes will normally be too weak. Leave first; fight later.
Spooky Steve does not use a conventional health-threshold phase change. The encounter becomes harder because his enormous health pool punishes flat-damage builds, his close-range hits can end a run, and repeated short control effects become less dependable if the fight lasts too long.
| Fight state | What happens | Your response |
|---|---|---|
| Spawn warning | The Crypt timer reaches zero, followed by a brief grace window. | Stop looting, move away from walls and the exit edge, and make sure your defensive charges are ready. |
| Opening control window | Steve closes distance while Frostwalker, Black Hole, Thunder Mitts, or other control effects can hold him. | Keep attacks landing so Dexecutioner gets as many execute attempts as possible. Do not walk into him to chase damage. |
| Extended fight | Short repeated stuns and freezes may stop holding him reliably; contact becomes the main danger. | Favor long-duration control, preserve open floor behind you, and finish with execute procs before he reaches you repeatedly. |
Why normal DPS looks broken: the displayed health pool is roughly 340.3 Ud. Ordinary damage can be working while barely moving the bar. Dexecutioner's boss interaction is valuable because its execute proc removes a percentage-sized chunk instead of relying only on flat damage.
The safest reproducible plan uses Athena for full-hit protection through her Aegis interaction, Dexecutioner as the real boss killer, and long crowd-control windows. The build is designed around more execute attempts, not a giant displayed Damage stat.
| Slot | Priority | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Athena | Her Aegis setup gives the cleanest safety net against a hit that would defeat most builds. |
| Required weapon | Dexecutioner | Repeated hits roll execute procs that can remove meaningful portions of boss health. |
| Defense | Aegis | Provides hit protection while you wait for the next control and execute window. |
| Control | Black Hole + Frostwalker | Hold or slow Steve so Dexecutioner can keep connecting from safer positions. |
| Tomes | Duration, Quantity, Cooldown, XP | Extend control, add projectiles, reduce gaps, and reach the required levels before entering the second Crypt. |
| High-value item | Thunder Mitts | Adds a timed lightning strike that can create another control window. Duration makes each useful opening easier to exploit. |
| Backup execute | Joe's Dagger | Adds execute chances to more hits, but it is a lucky item pickup rather than the foundation of the route. |
Upgrade order: secure Dexecutioner first, then raise Duration and attack frequency. Once the control loop is stable, add Quantity and Cooldown to increase the number of safe execute attempts.
Alternative: Megachad can use Flex windows with Dexecutioner and control weapons. It scales faster, but Athena is easier to reason about when a single unblocked hit can end the attempt. See the full Athena build or Megachad build for their normal-run priorities.
Take only safe pickups on the way out. Do not wait for Steve during the low-level opening.
Find all four key coffins, defeat the guardians, and level Dexecutioner, control weapons, and core tomes.
Confirm four keys, reliable ordinary-enemy clear, strong Duration, frequent Dexecutioner hits, and at least one defensive plan.
Use the keys, advance through the interior, then choose an open area where you are not pinned against a wall or doorway.
When the timer reaches zero, stop opening distant loot. Let Aegis recharge and use the grace window to create space.
Keep Black Hole and Frostwalker between you and Steve, maintain Dexecutioner contact, and move only enough to preserve open floor.
You have not had time to build Duration, control, defense, or enough execute attempts. Escape and return stronger.
A huge number on the stat screen is not the same as percentage-based boss damage. Bring Dexecutioner.
A pile of rapid short stuns may become unreliable before Steve dies. Longer windows and continuous execute pressure are safer.
Steve can close the distance and remove your escape lane. Use the grace window to take the center or another open route.
This usually means the build is relying on ordinary damage. Watch for large execute chunks rather than small continuous ticks.
The displayed timer is not the instant spawn, but the remaining grace period is short. Position first; treasure comes second.
He appears inside the first or second Crypt on the Graveyard map shortly after the Crypt timer reaches zero. The second Crypt is the better place to fight because you can build outside first.
Use Athena with Aegis, Dexecutioner, Black Hole, Frostwalker, and high Duration. Keep Steve controlled while repeated Dexecutioner hits trigger percentage-based boss damage.
It is the most reliable option. Flat damage is impractical against Steve's health pool, while Dexecutioner's boss execute interaction removes meaningful chunks. Joe's Dagger can help if it drops, but do not plan the route around getting it.
In a long fight, repeated short control effects become less dependable. Increase Duration, keep control windows overlapping, and maintain execute pressure so the fight ends before Steve reaches you repeatedly.
You complete the boss requirement for Roberto and unlock Roberto for purchase from the character selection screen.
Yes. Zero starts a short grace window rather than an instant failure. Use that brief delay to stop looting, recharge defenses, and move into an open position.
